With two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning in the first game of the 1988 World Series, Kirk Gibson, despite injuries to both legs, went to bat as a pinch hitter. Oakland Athletics relief pitcher Dennis Eckersley was one pitch away from winning the first game when Gibson remarkably hit a two-run home run off of a back-door slider into the right field stands. The National League MVP had created the most memorable first game victory and set the winning tone for the rest of the series.
